Contract Chemical Engineer
DTE Materials is looking for a chemist/chemical engineer to help us scale our ClearWash process. The premice of this process is to chemically and mechanically alter discarded biomass into useable aggregates and fibers for a variety of industries. Read in more detail here: https://www.dtematerials.com/hempsupply
The ideal candidate is proficient in organic chemistry with an emphasis on natural fiber chemistry and anatomy (cellulose, lignin, hemicellulose, cell wall structures). The majority of the initial R&D and benchtop modeling has been completed, so the goal of the CSO is to help us translate this data and process to scale. The stronger emphasis of focus would be on the chemical engineering side in developing a process that is scalable in terms of output and cost while still achieving the key performance metrics of the ClearWash process. We have already identified and placed ranges around these KPIs. The CSO will select certain solvents, pressures, temperatures, and treatment conditions to achieve the identified KPI ranges while remaining cost-effective and environmentally friendly. We would prefer a candidate that has taken a similar process from benchtop to scale before. Examples of this could include biofuel processing, biopolymer extraction and isolation, etc. Connections to industry partners and access to existing equipment would be a bonus.
We can elaborate further during initial communications so the exact process, KPIs, and expectations will be clear.
The position will be incremental in time demand with the majority of the work initially being done remote (system design/budgeting/theory), and will transition to in-person for some time during the actual setup and startup phase of the ClearWash equipment. We are open to paying as a contractor or with equity as a more long-term role to further advance ClearWash objectives (new cellulose sources, byproducts, optimization).
